Duro Olowu was born in Lagos Nigeria but is London based he spent most of his childhood travelling between Nigeria and Europe,
his true love for fashion & design has been inspired by a mix of fabrics, textures and draping techniques of textures and draping techniques of the clothing worn by the women that surround him, he mostly drew inspiration from women, women of different race & body sizes.
Before embarking on a world of spending long hours sketching, on the sewing machine & hectic backstage madness he studied law in England before returning to Nigeria where he practiced law for a few years until he felt a burning urge to pursue a career in fashion designing when he returned to London, that’s when his self titled fashion line started in 2004.
His first ever collection received overwhelming feedback from fashion editors and buyers who felt he has a different offering in the fashion industry, the aesthetics of his designs are bold, bright, represent the femininity of women with an unshaken vibrancy & most importantly celebrating the authenticity & originality of Africa& its women. Being granted the privilege to grow up in different countries has developed & advanced his working environment & skills in designing ie: mixing shade, patterns & executing distinct garments. He then won the ’New Designer of the Year Award’ at the British Fashion Awards, the only designer to have ever done so without a catwalk show.
Duro was also awarded a TopShop’s ‘NEWGEN’ sponsorship for his first three catwalk shows as part of London fashion week beginning in 2007. In 2010 he was named Best International Designer at the African Fashion Awards in South Africa as well as being one of 6 finalists for the Swiss Textiles Award in Zurich.
He has curatored projects like “Material” 2012 and “More Material” 2014, at Salon 94 Gallery in New York. Mr Olowu’s designs are merely appealing to women who seek timeless modern luxury & sophisticated urban and resort wear.
