Zacharia Mukwira best known as Zach was born in Zimbabwe on the 15th November 1968 married to Nomsa and has three children, two boys and one girl.He obtained his higher education at Wadzanai High School in Shambve, Zimbabwe, where he obtained his O Levels. Zach studied visual arts, including movement and dance & theatre and Drama. He then left for Bulawayo to help his disabled Grandfather.

Where he began working in the family business and started out measuring and working on house plans. His grandfather later started an organization called ‘Zimbabwe Integration through us.’ The organization was established to empower disabled children, Zach offered his available hands in helping the children to paint and experiment with different textures and colors, teaching them about the beauty of art, painting & its endless opportunities.

The organisation was a huge inspiration to Zach to start painting he then decided to take them to the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo.Mr Mukwira became a member of the art gallery and founded the ‘Artists Forum’ in Bulawayo pushing art forward,all in the name of exposing art in Zimbabwe,educating the youth to partake in art,a form of unity.A lady by the name of Linda from Isis Art Gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg was one of the first to recognise Zach’s talents and that led to him being contacted by Nando’s in 2005. He was commissioned by the company to paint two pieces on how he perceived Nando’s as a brand.These two pieces have been proudly placed in various Nando’s stores.

Zach did a solo exhibition called ‘Still Searching.’ This was held in the Unity Gallery in Melville. The exhibition was successful, the feedback was heartwarming. Zach’s work is mostly paintings abstracts of African based stories with his influences being subjects of everyday life around him, his paintings are a growth of Africa, goes to show that inspiration are the people that walk up and down the streets.

‘Think Luck – if you fall into a river, check your pockets for fish.’ This is a theme carried through in his paintings.Zach goes by this slogan.

Art auction and charity gala dinner held in March at the Grant Thornton South offices in Sandown, Johannesburg raised more than R100 000 for the community radio station, Alex FM. The Minister of Public Enterprises, Melusi Gigaba took home Zacharia Mukwira’s untitled mixed piece after placing a winning bid on the framed art work.


Zach took part in the Cape Town World Design Capital Project in the city of Stellenbosch . Mukwira painted one of the concrete benches that are beautifying the town of Eikestad.
