Inspiration Lives In MaXhosa Knitwear by @LadumaNgxokolo


Laduma Ngxokolo a South African textile& knitwear designer born in Port Elizabeth 1986 studied at Lawson Brown high school& earned himself a bursary from P.E  based Cape Wools South Africa & Mohair  South Africa during his Btech at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) IN 2010. That very same year Laduma  won the South African National Leg of the South African Society of Dyers& Colorists (SDC) design competition. It earned him a trip to London where he received his first prize internationally for the competition.

Ever since then Mr Ngxokolo has been booming locally&internationally, his fashion line has been featured in fashion weeks7 that has been a big& real achievement for him and that experience has humbled him. Laduma’s AmaKrwala range of knitwear weaves Xhosa traditions &beadwork patterns into the attire

“In my childhood we always had a very traditional upbringing. My mother used to read me Xhosa anthropological books as bedtime stories& its something that I’ve grown up with, that I’m still growing into& I want to embrace it every way I can” says Ngxokolo.


Mr Ngxokolo makes a priority to use colour in his designs because its an important part of the Xhosa visual culture and utilizes local material  with longevity. so that the garments can be preserved for future generations.  Being the brainchild behind ” MaXhosa’  he has introduced innovative colourful textile designsin the fashion industry showcasing an extraordinary eye for colour &composition his fashion line is a must get.


Laduma has worked with well known people in the industry and that has kept him grounded, focused and made him stay true to himself at all times.. I absolutely love every single collection by MaXhosa, Ndiyazingca ngawe Bhuti, ndivuyiswa kukuthanda kwakho isikho lethu ( I’m very proud of you brother, I’m happy that you are proud of our culture.). He has collaborated with Hinterveld to design a range of Mohair blankets&contemporary elegance. Earthy browns&rich blues are expressions of the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape.


He has been awarded the best Emerged designer at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa 2014. The growth of Laduma’s brand is very much impressive especially the medium he is using to reach to his target. All the best Mr Ngxokolo for your future plans your work is highly loved&appreciated.
