My Connection with Neo Soul Music

Let me take you on a brief history of the genre Neo- Soul. Neo- Soul is a term coined by music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg during the late 1990s to market and describe a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. Its heavily based in soul music, neo soul is distinguished by a less conventional sound than its contemporary R&B counterpart, with incorporated elements ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop, fusion, and African music. It has been noted by music writers for its traditional R&B influences, conscious-driven lyrics, and strong female presence. It developed in the 80’s and 90’s in the United States& United Kingdom, as a soul “revival” movement. It impressively earned mainstream success during the 90s, with the commercial and critical breakthroughs of several Neo soul artists that were marketed as an alternative to the producer-driven, digitally approached R&B of the time. Since its initial mainstream popularity and impact on the sound of contemporary R&B, it has been expanded and diversified musically through the works of both African-American and international artists. According to Mark Anthony Neal, “neo-soul and its various incarnations has helped to redefine the boundaries and contours of black pop. My love for Neo- Soul arose during my adolescent stage when I first heard of Jill Scott,Floetry, Erykah Badu&Lauryn Hill. I never understood the music but I loved the melody, rhythm&soothing voices .Until I became older&wiser I got to understand the lyrics, connected deeper to the music, the diversity of the genre, the origination of Neo-Soul as a whole& the inspiration behind each artist. The style is also often described as groove music, and has a smooth, flowing nature to the beats. Most neo soul lyrics are very emotional and deal with relationship and love issues. Neo- Soul is essentially modern-day soul music, with contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. It differs from contemporary R&B in that it’s obviously more soulful, and it also tends to have deeper messages and meanings than R&B. Overall neo-soul takes on more of a mellow and melancholy vibe, rather than an upbeat tone. It encourages slow dancing rather than choreography. Here are my top 5 timeless Neo Soul songs. 1. Jill Scott- The Way. 2. D’Angelo- Cruisin’. 3. Erykah Badu- Didn’t Cha Know. 4. Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. 5. Eric Roberson ft. Phonte- Been Inlove
